Design Style: Art Deco

Art Deco Style

Art Deco is a design style developed in the 1920’s and 30’s. We can still see it as an inspiration in modern times. This style is influenced by Ancient Egypt, Aztec Mexico, Babylon, Greco-Roman Classicism, and advances in modern technology. It is a style that ich characterized by geometrical shapes, luxury, and lavish mood. It embraces the use of patterns.

This mood board represents the main characteristics of this style in stylized wildlife in the jaguar sculpture, sweeping curves, and vertical lines of the furniture. Use of gold in furniture and geometric shapes in the rug and wallpaper. The chandelier is luxurious and gives a sense of extravagance. There is a use of art deco pattern throughout.

Art Deco is a strong design style and provides elements that can be used in a variety of spaces to bring out old-school glamour. I have chosen a mood board that would reflect this style in a living room for a client that is stylish and bold.

Art Deco uses metallic details which together with the light features create spaces that are bathed in elegant light. It is not soft and the strong emphasis is on geometric shapes, polished high-shine finishes, and color blocking.
